RICHARD BAILEY
GET TO KNOW
From the beaches of San Diego to the mountains of Nepal
Born and raised in San Diego County, Richard graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a degree in Business Finance, and later graduated from the University of North Dakota with a Master of Science in Applied Economics. He was elected to the Coronado City Council in 2012, and, in 2016, at the age of 30, Richard was elected the 53rd Mayor of Coronado, becoming the youngest mayor in the city’s history. With private sector experience at a Fortune 500 company and a small business owner, Richard brings an extensive and diverse background to policy discussions.
CORONADO MAYOR
Bailey emphasized financial responsibility, public safety, infrastructure, and the environment as his top priorities. With the lowest city-assessed tax rates in the State of California, a healthy general fund reserve, and zero debt, Coronado earned a AAA bond rating. Richard led by example and twice voted against his own pay raise.
BUSINESS PROFESSIONAL
In addition to public service experience, Bailey previously worked as a financial analyst for a Fortune 500 company and taught economics as an adjunct professor at the University of San Diego.
Richard currently owns multiple small businesses, including a watercraft rental company with operations in San Diego Bay and Lake Tahoe as well as a beach and bike rental shop in Mission Beach.
MOUNTAINEER
In 2024, during a 33 day expedition, Bailey fulfilled a childhood dream of summitting Mount Everest. Most recently, Richard summitted Mount Vinson in Antarctica as part of his new goal to climb the tallest peak on all 7 continents. (His mom is not a fan of this hobby.)
ACCOMPLISHED ATHLETE
In 2015 Bailey completed his first full Ironman and ran the Boston Marathon in 2023. Today he still enjoys training for marathons, triathlons, and multi-stage endurance races.
You can also catch him in OB or South Mission Beach playing volleyball. (His mom likes these hobbies more.)
PADRES FAN
And when he's not in the office or on the mountains, you can find Bailey at Petco Park... go Pads!
